Final Edition

Press Release (2/4/09)

This marks the final edition of the Arizona Rattler.  Mesquite Media Group, LLC, the parent company of the Rattler, has made the difficult decision to suspend printing of the weekly newspaper.  “It’s simply a matter of money,” said Editor and co-owner Morris Workman, who with partner Cindi Delaney, started the first-ever newspaper dedicated to the Arizona Strip.  “Since the start of the project back in November, we have taken in $1,217 in revenue.  In that same period, we’ve had expenses of more than $3,600.  It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure this one out.”  The lack of revenues was the result of several factors, including a collapsing national economy.  Advertising is down across the country as companies scale back on their ad expenditures.  [read more...]

Area Residents Unite in Town Board

By Michele Kosar (1/27/09)

A late start, a busy Sheriff’s office and numerous citizen announcements filled the agenda of the still-developing Virgin River Communities Town Board last Thursday evening.  This loosely formed group continues its attempt to garner community involvement, while its mission and purpose continue to evolve.  The most anticipated event of the evening, conversation with the Sheriff’s Department, was delayed then truncated.  Deputy Jason Thien arrived much later than expected due to his and Deputy Kole’s securing of a crime scene in the nearby area.  Thien did spend some minutes with the group, offering a few words in between returning to the field office for equipment to return to process the crime scene.  He expressed his understanding of the community concern over the graffiti tagging in the area in recent weeks and he assured the more than 40 community members present that he is working the case, along with various other law enforcement agents.  [read more...]

BDES Top Students Recognized

Press Release (1/27/09)

Beaver Dam Elementary is proud to recognize the following students as Students of the Month for the month of December. These wonderful students were chosen from each classroom and at each grade level for demonstrating the December character trait of “self discipline.”  Award winners from each classroom enjoyed an ice cream party with the principal.  In addition to these classroom winners, a student from each  grade was recognized.  Grade level winners were presented with a special award at the January Littlefield Unified School District Board Meeting.  [read more...]

BD Fans Treated To Triple Overtime Thriller

By Marty Israel (1/27/09)

It has been said that there is no such thing as a moral victory.  But for the Beaver Dam Diamondbacks, who came oh so close to pulling out a win against the Williams Vikings on Friday night in a triple overtime masterpiece, it can be said that theirs was a proud loss.  The Vikings came away with a narrow victory in the Beaver Dam gymnasium, but they were not the team with the most hustle.  They were not the team that worked the hardest and they were hardly the grittiest team on the court.  Those accolades belong to the D-backs.  And while this one slips officially into the loss column, it was not a loss that leaves a bad taste, as the D-Backs can walk away from the game knowing that they left everything on the court and came within a cat’s whisker of defeating a team that seemed well on its way to a lopsided victory in quarter number three. Farewell…For Now

We gave it a shot.  And it looks like, in this instance, the naysayers were right.  The Arizona Strip isn’t ready for its own newspaper.  Yet.  With the hubris of a company that cares more about telling the truth than it cares about money, we thought that if we put out a good newspaper, everything else would take care of itself.  And in a better economy, we still believe that.  But the money simply isn’t there.  And in spite of our most noble of intentions to give the Arizona Strip its own voice, particularly in the face of a county government that doesn’t even acknowledge its existence and two larger nearby communities that sometimes don’t show enough respect for the 5,000 people of this northwestern Arizona enclave, money matters.  We still believe that the Strip deserves to have that voice.  We just can’t afford to pay for that voice anymore.  [read more...]
